“Shut the fuck up!” I scream, closing my eyes and pinching the bridge of my nose as my head begins to throb again.
Olivia moans behind me, and I spin to look at her. Her eyelashes flutter and she slowly lifts her head. Her gaze lands on me first when she fully opens them and gasps.
“Kyle,” she whispers.
I smile. “Hey, princess.”
Her eyes widen in panic, and she thrashes around in the chair.
“Baby,” he pleads.
She whips her head up, looking around me and her voice cracks, “Sage.”
Her body racks with tremors. The look on her face is utter devastation. The realization sending silent tears streaming down her face.
Her hero can’t save her this time.
I sidestep to block her view of him, drawing her attention back to me. She flinches away when I brush my knuckles down her tear-streaked cheek.
“I’ve come to take you home.”
“Get your hands off her!”
I almost fall into her when this motherfucker kicks the back of my knee, throwing me off balance. Snarling, I spin around to face him. I lift my left arm and then plunge the knife into his thigh.
He howls in pain.
Olivia screams in fear.
Nika laughs maniacally.
Facing Olivia again, I sigh. “You crawled out of my grasp with blood on your hands. Thinking you could be reborn. That you get to live a happy life without me. You are mine.” I wave a hand behind me. “You think your white knight with his shiny badge knows you?”
He groans behind me, hissing through his teeth. I place my hands over her wrists on the arms of the chair and lean into her face.
“I made you, Olivia. You would be nothing without me.” I glance at the bruises tainting her skin. There’s a piece of glass still embedded in one of the cuts on her arm, and I carefully pull it out.
“Look at what they’ve done to you. He could never protect you the way that I could.” I brush the hair away from her face. “We could be happy again. We were happy, until everyone else got in the way.”
Her tears fall faster as she sobs, and I lean in to lick them from her freckled skin.
“I’d salt the earth with your tears. Kill everything but you and me. My Lilith. You don’t have to pretend to be his Eve anymore. You know you belong in the dark—with me.”
“Let me go. Please,” she whispers so close to my lips.
“I’m going to rip your fucking heart out! Get away from her!”
I don’t even glance in his direction while listening to him attempt to free himself again. He’s not worth my time. Everything that I want—I need—is right in front of me.
“Princess. Look at me,” I demand, my ears ringing.
Her eyes lift to mine and a shiver rolls through her.
“She stabbed you remember?” Nika is standing behind Olivia now.
I stand slowly, my gaze drifting to the knife in her hand. I look back at Sage and see that it’s no longer in his thigh where I left it. Moving to Olivia’s side, I step closer to her.
“Yes, I remember.”
