His hand dropped to his side. “It’s been a long morning. Why don’t we take a break and wait for the others to get here?”

“Are you kidding me?” I had to tuck my hands under my thighs to stop myself from strangling one of them. “We’re just getting started. What does Noah really do? Why would the FBI be after him?”

Another shared glance between the guys had me grinding my teeth.

“The only thing I can guess is that it was a mix-up,” Julian said. “And we really can’t say more about his job, unless you want to share what you know.”

I groaned, looking to the others for help, but only Adrian met my gaze with an apologetic smile. I latched on to him and the dozens of questions I still had.

“Why were you following me?” I asked. “You didn’t already know I was Noah’s girlfriend when you stalked me?”

His smile disappeared. “Well…”

Looks were exchanged between the guys, and I officially felt even more like an outsider.

“Kincaid asked me to,” Adrian finished lamely after they wrapped up their telepathic discussion.

But that was still a surprise to me, and I couldn’t keep it from my face.

Noah had asked him to stalk me?

What. The. Heck.

CHAPTER 27

A Whole New World

My own boyfriend had asked someone to stalk me.

That was the least romantic thing in the world, and it set off warning bells the size of Texas in my head. “He asked you to follow me? Why? Why would he do that?”

Rafe snorted before Adrian could answer. “See? He didn’t trust her himself. She’s obviously lying.”

All three of us sent Rafe sharp looks before Adrian raised his voice. “He just assigned me to step in if anyone bothered you. I assumed he was worried about bullies or an actual stalker or something. He didn’t share details.”

My brow wrinkled. Any answers they gave just brought up more questions. “What do you mean he assigned you?”

Adrian winced, looking down at his hands. “It was just a favor while he was busy. Sorry, by the way. I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“I wasn’t scared,” I quickly denied, holding my chin up. “I had my pepper spray.”

A smirk peeked through as he looked up again, and it warmed his dark eyes. “Right. Of course. I guess I’m the one who should’ve been scared.”

I averted my gaze at the teasing glint in his eyes, instead focusing on the knots of doubt still tangled in my stomach. “But I told Noah someone was following me, so he must’ve known I’d seen you. He didn’t ask you about us talking?”

He lifted a shoulder. “I haven’t seen much of Kincaid lately.”

I nodded, sensing a dead end as I checked the time on my phone. Barely an hour had passed since Teresa dropped me off at the clinic, but it felt like days. Being at this duplex wasn’t productive. It just reminded me of Noah, and now I was surrounded by his equally mysterious friends, whose answers weren’t making me feel any better about the situation.

“I should head back to my dorm,” I decided aloud, getting up and facing Julian. “Will you call me when you hear something? You already have my number from the background check, I’m guessing.”

He frowned. “Emma, it isn’t safe for you to be at your dorm right now.”

“Why not?”

He hesitated, running his tongue over the front of his teeth. “Did Kincaid tell you who that man was? The older one at the buffet, with the scar?”

Rafe sat up straighter. “Florez saw her?”
