I bit back a groan at the sharp call behind me. The last thing I needed right now was a librarian’s wrath.

“Sorry! I—” I turned, but instead of a fire-breathing book dragon, Blaise stood at the end of the aisle with a frown. “Oh. It’s you.”

She wasn’t even looking at me. Her gaze was trained over my shoulder. “Who was that guy?”

Was?

I whipped around, but my stalker was long gone—like he’d vanished in one of Finn’s impressive magic tricks.

My shoulders slumped. “I have no idea.”

Blaise came up next to me and crossed her arms. “Is that why Noah isn’t here? So you can have a secret rendezvous in the stacks with some other guy?”

I scowled. “It wasn’t a rendezvous. And I already told you—Noah’s working.”

She lifted one perfectly groomed eyebrow. “Sure he is. And I’m sure he’d love to hear about you cozying up with another guy in the library.”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“Of course not,” she said lightly, with that infuriating little smirk. “See you later, Emma.”

She sauntered around the corner, leaving me muttering cheese-themed obscenities to myself.

This was just great. I was no closer to finding out why I had a stalker, and now Blaise would tell Noah she’d seen me cheating on him.

Lovely.

Defeated, I dropped my head back against the bookcase with a painful thunk—causing a book to fall from two shelves up and smack me in the face.

I yelped, clapping a hand over where it’d hit my forehead. “Mothercracker!”

That was going to bruise.

“Young lady,” a voice whispered sharply, just as a librarian stormed around the corner. I wasn’t too proud to admit her disapproving glare made me cower. “You are in a library.”

“I’m sorry,” I whispered through a clenched jaw, barely holding back a snarl.

Her eyes narrowed, and she marched forward to pick up the fallen book. Sniffing primly, she clutched it to her chest before disappearing around the corner.

I rubbed at the growing bump on my forehead, trying not to pout.

Maybe Noah could kiss it better when he got back from New York.

CHAPTER 18

A Cocktail Party

Dear Diary,

My stalker is growing bolder. He followed me to the library of all places.

I need to figure out his motive. Part of me can’t help suspecting my parents hired him to keep an eye on me to make sure I’m focusing on piano—but my mother once fired a maid because she got a tiny tattoo of a dove on her wrist. No way would she hire a guy covered in them.

Unless she wanted to throw me off the scent…

Only slightly paranoid,

Emma
