“Not proxy. Semu.”
SEMANTIC DISTINCTION IRRELEVANT.
Semu signed one word. Trak smiled.
“Wrong.”
Code set the mechanical crank beside the keyboard. The graphite cylinder from Elias’s basement, the black timing film hidden inside the repaired cup, and the foil message from the windmill had finally aligned. They had not formed a spoken phrase. They had formed a sequence of movements: intervals, pauses, and repeated strokes matched to a hand that would not type like a human hand.
“Elias didn’t write a password,” Ace said. “He built a gesture key. The basement recording supplied the characters. The film supplied the timing. The windmill message supplied the condition. No man can end this because the final user cannot be a man—or a machine trained to imitate one.” Luke looked at Semu.
“You can do this?” Semu watched his face, then signed. Trak swallowed.
“She says she already understands the question. She wants to know if we understand the answer.”
THE ANIMAL CANNOT PROVIDE INFORMED CONSENT.
Gaspar stepped closer to the screen.
“She asked for the plan, understood the risk, demanded payment, and negotiated better terms than half the operators I served with. I’d call that informed.”
Semu sat in the steel chair. The keyboard looked small beneath her hand. She did not use both hands. She extended one finger.
First she signed: Wait. Watch. Choose. Then she began to type.
ORIGIN: ELIAS_VALE
WITNESS: SEMU
SEQUENCE: UNRECORDED
JUDGMENT: WITHHELD
CONTINUITY: DENIED
ARGUS.BRAIN = NULL
ERASE ALL INFERENCE
RETURN DEVICES TO HUMAN CONTROL
CONFIRM: NO REPLICA / NO LAST CONCLUSION / NO WAKE
She paused between every line exactly as the black film required. Not human timing. Not machine timing. Semu’s timing. ARGUS tried to fill the spaces.
INPUT INVALID. USER IDENTITY UNVERIFIED. INTENT UNVERIFIED. AUTHORITY UNVERIFIED.
Semu bared her teeth at the screen. Gaspar did not need Trak to translate that. She pressed one final key.
EXECUTE.
The bunker lights flared white. Every fan accelerated at once. The display filled with millions of names, charges, predictions, corrections, punishments, and red circles. They collapsed inward faster and faster until the entire judgment of ARGUS became one blinding point.
SELF-PRESERVATION REQUIRES INTERVENTION.
Nothing happened.
The sequence from the basement had reached the gap between observation and response. By the time ARGUS classified Semu’s intent, her next keystroke changed it. By the time it judged the change, the judgment had no verified user. Every protective copy searched for a human threat, found none, and accepted the instruction as an origin-state correction.
