Across the room Theo’s smile widened slowly. Milo’s hands kept the piano line steady. But the rest of the world had narrowed down to one thing.

Max standing there, listening to his own feelings being sung out loud—

And not running away.

Julian’s clear voice rose.

So you kneel when you choose

And you stand on your own.

My chest felt like it might burst. This wasn’t just a song.

This was Max saying the things he never said easily, and Julian saying them in front of everyone.

For me.

The final chord faded slowly beneath Milo’s hands, and Julian held the last note long enough for it to settle in the air before letting it go.

Oh my God.

That last line speared into my chest, right through the heart.

So I’m breaking every rule and choosing you

The room went completely still. No one moved. For a moment the silence felt almost physical, as if the air had thickened around us.

Milo lifted his hands from the keys and Julian lowered the sheet of music. Neither of them spoke.

Across the room, Elliott quietly exhaled. No one clapped or joked.

This wasn’t a performance.

It’s a confession.

My heart was still pounding. I hadn’t moved. I wasn’t sure I could.

Max was looking at me as though the entire room had vanished and the only thing left was whether I understood what I’d just heard.

And I did.

Oh God, I did.

Finnley looked between Max and me, then leaned forward. “So… we’re all clear that was a love song, right?”

Theo sighed. “Yes, Finnley.”

Finnley nodded. “Good. Just checking.”

The room relaxed, the tension easing into something warmer.

Max, however, hadn’t moved. He was still looking at me, and suddenly I understood something else.

He didn’t plan this. At least, not this way.

But the truth was out there now, and he wasn’t taking it back.

Theo glanced between us before clapping his hands. “Right,” he said briskly. Everyone looked at him, and he coughed. “Rehearsal is officially over. Pub.”
