His eyes came back to mine, steadier now, but there was a guarded expression in them. I’d almost have said haunted.
“It isn’t something I use lightly.”
“Then I won’t use it again.” I kept my voice low and even.
I meant every fucking word.
Max laid his hand on my shoulder. “Wait a minute.” He inhaled slowly, and in that moment I knew something important.
We either go forward from this—or he walks away.
I didn’t want to lose him.
Max’s shoulders lost a little of their rigidity. “Let’s talk about this.”
My chest loosened in a way that had nothing to do with the scene we’d just stopped.
“What does Daddy mean to you?” he asked.
I get one shot at this.
I took a breath. “It means structure with warmth,” I said, choosing my words with care. “Authority without humiliation.”
He nodded once. “Keep going.”
“It means you correct me because you care how I grow, not because you’re angry.”
His Adam’s apple bobbed sharply.
“It means the rules you set make me feel safe.” I didn’t break eye contact. “And when I mess up, you don’t withdraw.”
He expelled a long breath. “You want consistency.”
“Yes.”
“And praise.”
I smiled. “Obviously.”
Max folded his arms. “Okay… what does Daddy not mean to you?”
I squared my shoulders, my chin held high.
“It doesn’t mean you owe me 24/7 dominance,” I said. “It doesn’t mean I stop having opinions. And it definitely doesn’t mean you’re responsible for fixing my life.”
He nodded. “And if I say no?”
“I accept that,” I said without hesitation. I meant it too.
His reply seemed to take forever.
Max leaned back once more. “For me, Daddy doesn’t mean possession. Or emotional dependency.”
“I don’t want that,” I said quickly.
“It means responsibility,” he continued. “Intentional guidance. If I use that word, I’m choosing to step into something… layered.”
“I understand.”
