When The Fair Goes Dark

by Lafaye June

I ran.

Again.

His footsteps were quieter than the other guy, which made my ten times more scared.

I flew around a corner, nearly colliding with my own reflection, before I had to correct myself.

A laugh tore out of me, half terrified, half disbelieving.

Where the fuck were the other people at?

“Leave me alone!”

He didn’t.

Every time I thought I’d lost him, I caught a flash of black in the mirror.

A shoulder.

The mask.

A flash of a tall frame.

I rear around and then I see nothing.

My heart had to be beating over 150 beats per minute.

My eyes dart around the other hallway.

Nothing.

He was fucking with me.

How big was this maze??

No footsteps.

Nothing.

I see a hallway that I don’t think I’ve been down before.

With hope, I dart down the path.

My shoes come to a skid as I stare at a dead end with my face staring back at me from like four mirrors.

I turn around so my back was to them, as I stare at the entrance of the hallway I just came from.

Maybe I lost him?

Or maybe he was chasing someone else?

Why did that kind of make me pissed?

What was that feeling?

I breathe harder as my back faces the mirrors, and I watch cautiously for a little longer to see if the coast was clear.

“Fucking dick.”
