When The Fair Goes Dark

Page 6

by Lafaye June

“Wait, it’s a two in one or something?”

It was a single page but the top was lightly colored orange, and had the Ferris wheel and such on it. But it turns to dark orange in the middle and looked eerie.

Like it held something deeper in it than just what was on the picture.

I looked up at her and she had this gleam in her eye. “Yes. During the day, its a typical fair right?”

I nod at her so she can continue.

“But at night, it turns into haunted and spooky circus.”

A haunted circus?

“Oh, like a haunted house?”

She stares at me a little before she just begins to nod slowly, her beautiful curls bouncing.

“Yeah, kind of.” she says. “It’s like a tradition every year to go to it for us.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Yes, and it’s only one night a year.”

That was odd.

I thought fairs were open like three days a year or something?

“Us?” I asked after I recalled what she said.

“Yeah. Me and my other friends. But, I think your cool as shit and I would love for you to come with.”

“Oh wow.” I say.

Then, her eyebrows furrow a little. “Wait, you are eighteen right?”

I felt stumped. I didn’t want to lie, but what if that changes her invite to me?

I mean, I was seventeen, I felt like that was close enough to eighteen, right?

“Yeah.” I lie.

She does a little hop.

“So, will you please go with us?”

I think about it further. Maybe I could take Ryan with me or something.

“Can my little brother come?”

She doesn’t say anything right away, before she shakes her head.

“To the fair, yeah. But, girl at night, it gets super spooky. I wouldn’t bring him to that.”

Hmmm.

Maybe I do need a night. Just with some new friends.

“Okay, I’m down.” I say and her face lights up.
