“Okay, but clearly you decided to make the decision to chase me. To find me year after year. Obviously that means it was you who I wanted behind the mask. Even if I didn’t know it was you specifically.”
I didn’t know how to feel.
“I know.”
“So why wouldn’t you say something after he showed up?”
He tilted his head on his head rest.
“Because I thought it was already done.”
“What was?”
“Everything. He unmasked himself as me. You already got the face behind the mask.”
I frowned.
“But it wasn’t the right one.”
He looked at me. “But you couldn’t tell.”
I sat back and stared straight ahead.
“I think I could.”
“What?”
I moved so my body faced his now in the seat.
“I think I could tell.”
“How?”
I searched his face.
“It didn’t feel how it should.”
He stayed silent as I continued.
“There lacked some things that I got from you in the mask. It felt strange and odd. I just thought it was maybe because of how everything played out over the years.”
He nodded.
“There was something missing and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what it was.”
“Is that why you guys broke up?”
“Yes. The lack of chemistry. It felt forced and so different.”
“Wow.” he breathed out. “I had no idea.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Right. You think your brother could replace what we had?”
He had the gall to look bashful as he looked down.
“I am so sorry.”
