When The Fair Goes Dark

by Lafaye June

It was my last night down here before I went back to my moms with my little brother. Sebastian and I have been hanging out pretty much every single day, and last night when he asked me officially to be his girlfriend, it was a no-brainer.

Now, back to where we were.

The bar was loud.

Not in a bad way.

Just crowded.

It felt strange to actually be out doing something other than being at the bookstore with Willow, or at my dads house.

But, Willow had somehow convinced half our group to come out, and by ten o’clock we’d taken over most of the tables in the back corner.

Music played too loudly from the speakers.

Someone was arguing over a pool game.

Willow was laughing so hard she nearly spilled her drink.

And Sebastian was sitting beside me with his arm stretched across the back of my chair.

I smiled when he leaned over.

“You having fun?”

“Maybe.”

“Maybe?”

“Ask me again in an hour.”

He laughed and kissed my temple.

I leaned into him.

It still felt strange.

No masks.

Just Sebastian.

“Oh, he finally made it!” Sebastian yelled.

I turned my head to see Sullivan walking up to the table.

I’ve never seen him outside of his work uniform, so it was strange seeing him in just dark jeans, and a simple black button up.

I immediately stopped my perusal when I realized I was probably staring and my boyfriend was now literally his brother.

Putting on a smile, I looked right at him to see he was looking at Sebastian.

The rest of the guys pat him on his back as he took a seat at the only one available. Next to Minnie.

Minnie was a friend of the carnival that was invited. I got the sense she didn’t really like me, and that was based off her pointed stares and inability to say hi to me.

I get it, I was new in this realm and apparently shes been apart of the team for years and years.

But, if only she knew Sebastian and I’s history, she might not be so quick to judge.
