“That’s none of your business. And I’m not about to stand outside this barbershop going back and forth wit’ an ex. That’s tacky, and I ain’t never been a tacky bitch.”

“You moving kind of fast considering it’s only been three months.”

“Apparently, I ain’t moving fast enough.”

“So, you really done? Like this it?”

“Been done, Morgan. You just now catching on.”

She looked away, and for the first time since our breakup, I thought she actually heard me.

The door to the shop opened before any other words could be exchanged between us. I looked back, and Jay was walking out.

“You good?” he asked me.

“Yes,” I assured him.

“Aight. Dre can cut Chuston. He’s finishing up with his client now, and he’ll be next.”

“Oh, so now you taking money out my pocket too, my nigga?” Morgan questioned, real hostile.

Jay’s expression barely changed. “It really ain’t that deep. I just figured it would be best.”

“Nah, it’s deep as fuck. You find out this my ex, and now it’s a problem wit’ me cutting his hair?”

I cringed because this was so unlike her. She was usually good with keeping her feelings at bay.

Jay let out a short laugh. “I ain’t say none of that shit you just said, and I’m not gonna address the ex shit ‘cause I really don’t give a fuck.”

“Man, that shit lame. I move my schedule around to accommodate you, and now you giving Dre my client.”

“Look, I don’t argue wit’ females. Never have, never will. But I got a cousin who do. I suggest you take your overly emotional ass inside and to the back. You may need to woosah.”

Morgan’s face twisted. “You threatening me wit’ a bitch.”

“Nah. I’m making a promise that I intend to keep should you choose not to move around.”

There was something menacing in Jay’s tone, something that told me he wasn’t fucking around.

“Jay.” I touched his arm. “It’s fine.”

“Man, fuck this. I’m cool on you, Jai!”

Morgan stormed back into the shop, leaving me and Jay outside.

“Damn, Ma. That coochie that good?”

I tried my best not to laugh but failed.

“’Cause if it is, I want it.”

“This is not a laughing moment.”

“The hell it is. I almost got beat up by Studdy.”

“Who the hell is… never mind. Look, that relationship is done and has been done for a minute.”

“You ain’t gotta explain nothing to me, Ma. You already made it clear who you rocking wit’. Come on, let’s get back inside to Chuston.”
