My mouth curved into a smile. “Good observation.”

He propped his phone up and sat up against a headboard that looked twice the size of mine.

“I mean, what else you expect from an A-plus student?”

“Right. So, what did you think about what I read?”

“I think the author knows how to write some shit to keep the reader entertained for sure. What you say her name was again?”

“Nai.”

“And the book?”

“Thug Me The Right Way 2. You forgot that quick?”

“I ain’t gon’ lie. When you be talkin’, I hear you, but I be looking at your lips.”

Grinning, I covered my mouth. “The book, Jamison.”

“Right. From the chapter you read, I gathered that that nigga, Kane, needed meds. He was really obsessed wit’ shorty. Ain’t that much love in the world that’ll have me out here ready to kidnap nobody.”

Well, damn, I thought. He had actually been listening.

“You smiling again,” he pointed out.

“I know.”

“Any reason why?”

“Because I’m impressed.”

“By my listening skills or my comprehension?”

“Both.” I giggled.

“Man, fuck outta here.”

Placing a bookmark in the page I stopped on, I set the book on my nightstand and got under the cover. Pulling my blanket high over my chest, I turned to the camera.

“You sleepy?”

“No. Comfortable.”

We’d been on FaceTime for a little over two hours. The conversation hadn’t started there though. We’d talked this morning on my way to work, again on my lunch break, and more once I was headed home. Since Wednesday night, there had barely been a stretch of a few hours where one of us hadn’t texted the other.

Jay was into good morning texts, which I absolutely loved because yeah, nigga, let me know I’m one of the first people on your mind when you wake up. At school, nothing had changed. He’d still look at me like he wanted something I couldn’t give him on school grounds. And now that I knew what it felt like to have his tongue in my mouth, I wanted to know what it felt like to have it on another set of lips. Ughh, he was so fine, and he could kiss. I really liked whatever this was and what it had the potential to blossom into.

“We still on for tomorrow at one-thirty?” I asked, referring to Chuston’s haircut.

“Yep. I hit my barber yesterday. We good.”

He slid down in the bed, pulling his cover halfway up his body.

“Great. Please let me know if anything changes beforehand. Last minute shifts and Chuston don’t gel well.”

“I get that. Baby Jay is the same.”

“Ughh, I just adore him. He’s been doing so well with transitioning.”
