She was so loud and animated, I immediately took her off speaker, pressing the phone against my ear.
“Girl, turn the volume down.”
“Girl, to hell with my volume. That nigga sent flowers? Fuck him. Fuck him tonight, friend. I won’t judge you. I swear to God I won’t.”
Pressing the button for my floor, I cracked up laughing. “The flowers weren’t from him, crazy. Morgan’s ass sent them.”
“Oh.” Her excitement fizzled quick, turning into disappointment. “In that case, get your Waiting To Exhale on and burn them shits.”
“No need. I had the concierge get rid of them.”
“Good for you. Now, I’m trying to figure out how long it take to get a pizza?”
“Longer than usual when you all of a sudden end up with company.”
She paused, and my phone beeped. Pulling it from my ear, it was a FaceTime video request from her. I connected it, and there her face was, all big and all teeth in the camera.
“Bitch, back up.” I giggled. “And you better not start that screaming again. I’m getting off the elevator, and I don’t have my headphones.”
“Okay, spill. I wanna know everything. Don’t leave nothing out. And I mean nothing.”
I went over the last hour and changed from top to bottom like she requested. By the time I was done, she was laid out on her couch with her hands under her chin, kicking her feet.
“You so childish,” I said, settling on my couch.
“Soooo, would you let him take you out again? Like all school boundaries, teacher limits, blah, blah, blah aside.”
“Yes,” I admitted.
Silence.
“Say something instead of sitting there smiling.”
“I don’t have nothing to say, boo. I’m just enjoying the moment like you. Did you give him your number?”
I shook my head no. “He didn’t ask.”
She nodded slowly. “Smooth.”
“I guess so.”
“I absolutely love this for you. My bitch is back in the game!”
Shaking my head, I laughed at her antics.
I didn’t know what I was going to do about Jay Sullivan just yet. What I could say for sure was that I’d gone from teetering the line to ready to step over it.
CHAPTER 11
Fresh Like Daddy
JAMISON
It was a little after five when me and Baby Jay entered the gym at Justin’s school to pick him up from basketball practice. Today was cut day, and they had appointments with their barbers at six. We had a weekly standing appointment every Wednesday that I did my best not to miss. Tonight, we’d be cutting it close, but I’d sent texts to the guys earlier to let them know. While Coach had the boys running their last drill, Baby Jay found himself a seat on the bottom bleacher, and I sat beside him.
“Go, Jussy!” he yelled out, causing heads to turn in our direction.
Justin gave him a quick wave of acknowledgment and then turned back quickly to the drill. I laughed because that too cool for school shit had started early. Which was why whenever I came to pick him up from school, I always gave him his space. I was still working on it with Baby Jay, but unlike me, he didn’t give a damn. He was always excited to see his big brother.
