“You brought an extra bag?” she asked.
“Yeah. Back up lunch and the other bag got his headphones and a few other things to help get him through the day in case he need it.”
“So, what was the po… never mind. Come on, Jay. Mommy wanna get a quick picture of you before we go inside.”
“Let me take one too ‘fore my people disown me.”
Once Baby Jay was out of the car, India’s request for one picture became a mini photoshoot in the parking lot. And after the first four pictures, he was over it.
“Damn, India. Save some storage for first grade. We gotta go in before he late.”
“Shut up. It’s his first day. This is a big moment.”
“Yeah, and I want him to actually get the day going. It’ll be his second day by the time you finish taking pics like he going to prom.”
I laughed, and she rolled her eyes hard.
“Let’s get you inside, champ.”
Naturally, Baby Jay took his position in the middle of us with me walking on the outside of the sidewalk and her on the inside, holding his hand. We entered the school looking like a unit, and I felt good about that, even though me and India were two frauds.
“Good morning, Mr. Sullivan,” the receptionist from the week before greeted as we walked in. “And good morning to you, Jamison. You ready for your first day?”
Baby Jay nodded.
“Good morning. This is his mother, India.”
“Morning,” India spoke.
“Good morning. Nice to meet you. Ms. Jai just brought the students in who take the bus. Do you need someone to escort you to the classroom, or do you remember where it is?”
“I remember,” I confirmed. I’d committed each spot we stopped in on the tour to memory actually.
“Okay, great. You can go right to the door, and I’ll buzz you all in. Have a great day, Jamison.”
“Have a great day,” he replied back.
“Good morningggg,” I heard a familiar voice sing behind me.
I turned toward it to find Ms. Jai walking in our direction, dressed in a mid-length Gucci skirt, brown sweater with a white collared shirt underneath it, and a pair of Gucci heels to match the look. Her hair was different than when I’d seen her last. It was still pulled back from her face by a Gucci headband, but it was out. She was fly and sexy as fuck while still managing to keep the look professional.
“Ms. Jai!” Baby Jay yelled out.
“Oh, you remember me. This is perfect!” she replied with the same enthusiasm. “Good morning, Jamison.”
“Which one?”
Her eyes moved between me and Baby Jay before she broke out in a wide grin.
“My favorite one, of course.”
“Gotta be clearer than that.”
I got so caught up in her laugh and pretty ass smile that I’d tuned India out until she spoke.
“Wow, your favorite student already, huh? On his first day?”
The smile on Ms. Jai’s face didn’t falter as her eyes moved toward India.
