She sucked her teeth and stepped back from me with her arms folded.
“Whatever, Jay. Jamison!” She called out to Baby Jay. “Come on, baby, so you can go with your dad.”
He came running, dragging his charger with him.
“Sorry, champ. Can you go back to the room until Daddy come get you?”
“Okay.”
I knew my request wouldn’t be a problem for him because Baby Jay didn’t need a reason to run back and forth. He did that shit for fun. Once he was gone again, I put my attention back on India.
“I don’t know what you sent him back there for. Clearly it ain’t shit going on.”
I ran my hand down my face. “I wish you’d put this much energy and effort into the shit that actually matters.”
“Oh, please. I’m not even going there witchu for the umpteenth time.”
I stood, shaking my head. “We not. I was just pointing that out.”
“Good.”
“Cool. You look like you need some alone time, so I’ll just keep him ‘til Monday. I’ll take him to school then bring him back after.”
“I think I wanna pull him out of that school.”
My head tilted. “And why is that?”
“I just don’t think it’s the right fit anymore.”
“And when you start thinking that?”
“Why does it matter? I don’t have a say-so in his education now?”
“Did I say that?”
“No, but your 21 questions are definitely implying it. I’m saying I think we should look into other options.”
“Aight. What other options?”
She shrugged. “I don’t know. I haven’t thought that far yet.”
India was proving my point without me even having to say what it was. Her not knowing let me know that she was just saying shit just because. We weren’t about to just pull him from a school he was thriving in just because she didn’t think it was the right fit, especially when she couldn’t even articulate what was wrong.
“Wasn’t you just telling me a few days ago that you’ve been seeing the benefits of the school environment since he’s been going there?”
“Okay, and?”
“So, make what you sayin’ make sense to me.”
“Jay, I’m not about to argue wit’ you about this.”
“Good ‘cause I would hate for you to sound dumber than you already do. Come on, champ!” I called out loud enough for him to hear me.
Running back out, he handed the charger to me then went straight to India for a hug.
Her face softened. “See you later, baby. Have fun with Daddy. I love you.”
“Love you, Mommy.”
