No reason for any of this anymore.
I zip the suitcase.
“I’m leaving tomorrow.”
“I know.” His voice stays maddeningly calm.
“I have to go back to Portland for a few weeks.”
“I know.”
“My apartment is there.”
“Yep.”
“My job.”
“Yep.”
“My life.”
That finally does it.
His jaw tightens. “Your life.”
“Yes.”
“Right.”
I put my hands on my hips. “Are you going to say anything besides one word at a time?”
“Thought you liked when I didn’t talk.”
“I liked you better when you didn’t talk.”
“Liar.”
“Fine. I liked you better before I knew what an enormous pain in the ass you are.”
His mouth twitches. “Also a lie.”
“Would you stop doing that?”
“What?”
“Acting like this doesn’t bother you.”
That wipes the amusement from his face.
I immediately wish I could take it back.
Caleb pushes away from the doorframe.
“You think it doesn’t bother me?”
“I don’t know what you think.”
“You’ve never had trouble telling me.”
