How to Annoy a Mountain Man

by Alana Gray

She raised her eyebrows. “Or Jonah, or.”

Then it clicked. “Oh, or I could take you back to my place.”

“Well, if it wouldn’t be too much trouble,” she said teasingly.

“You’ve already been a lot of trouble. What’s one more thing?”

She punched me lightly in the shoulder, and I put the truck into gear and started driving towards my cabin.

Briar was quiet in the passenger seat, whether because she was actually tired or because of the night’s events I wasn’t sure.

Then again, she might be thinking about what could happen once we were in my cabin alone. If I had to sleep on the couch and give her my bed, of course I would.

I’d rather we share, though.

If she was up for it, I sure as hell was.

My truck bumped over the familiar ruts in the dirt road that led to my cabin. When my headlights illuminated my place, Briar leaned forward in her seat. “This is where you live?”

I put the truck in gear and shut off the ignition. “Home sweet home.”

She was already unbuckling her seatbelt and opening the door. “I was picturing something more cave-like.”

I glared as I jumped out of the truck and approached the front door. “I’m not a Sasquatch, you know?”

“Hey, you made the comparison, not me.”

I glared harder, and she let out a cackling laugh.

“Just get your ass in the cabin.”

I opened the door, and she stepped through it, looking around as I clicked on a lamp.

It wasn’t much, just what I needed. Kitchen, living room, and bedroom all in one, with some storage and a bathroom off to the right.

“This is very… Unibomber chic,” she said, spinning in a circle to look at everything.

“I was aiming for cozy and practical.”

“Sure, that too.”

I shot her a look.

“I’m teasing.”

I stalked towards her until her back was to the wall. “You’re not the only one who knows how to tease.”

Chapter Ten

Briar

Imay have been a little pushy in getting an invite back to Jonah’s cabin. After sitting on his lap and getting my lips on his, though, how could I go home to my bed alone?

Now I was standing here, watching him watch me like I was an all-you-can-eat buffet, and I was shaking for all the right reasons.

I pressed my hands into the wall behind me, feeling the smooth wood of the logs against my palms. “Are you off the clock now? I don’t want any more interruptions.”

He pulled his phone from his pocket, his eyes still on me, and held the power button until the screen went dark before tossing the device aside.
