“Someone knew.”
I pull up the email and hand her my phone.
She reads it, then looks at me. “This is what you told me last night.”
“Exactly.”
Her attention sharpens. “What am I missing? You told me that was why you went.”
“That was a private conversation.”
“And I told no one.”
I close her office door. “Did you tell Celeste?”
“No.”
“Genevieve?”
Margot pushes the phone back toward me. “I told no one.”
“You’re my friend, Margot—”
“Exactly. So stop treating me like a suspect.”
I take my phone back. “You didn’t believe me.”
She holds up one hand. “I believed you went to Lisbon. I didn’t believe you went for a private collection.”
“Then what did you think?”
“I thought you needed a professional explanation for something personal.”
My hand tightens around my phone. “Based on what?”
“You abandoned Vienna. You came back with no client, no collection, and no explanation anyone could verify.”
“And you closed Bauer without me!”
Margot leans back and folds her arms across her chest. “Is that what this is about?”
“What?”
“You were supposed to handle it, Emma. You didn’t show, so I did.”
I straighten. “I’m not angry about Bauer.”
“Then why are you standing in my office interrogating me over a deal addressed to you?”
“Because it repeats what I told you.”
“Private collection. Lisbon. Discretion.” Margot counts them off on her fingers. “None of those things are unusual in our business.”
The dating app pings in my hand. My eyes drop to the notification before I can stop them.
Margot notices.
“What are you accusing me of, Emma?” she asks. “What are you really angry about? Because it kind of seems to me like it started before Vienna.”
