Why did he have a knife?
And what has Reid been doing all this time?
My phone vibrates.
Owen.
“Home?” he asks when he hears my voice.
“Yep.”
“I take it Todd made it home as well.”
“He’s sitting right here, as a matter of fact.”
“No, he isn’t.”
“How do you know?”
“Because when you have a man in your apartment, you don’t answer my calls.”
I set down my fork. “How would you know what I do when I have a man in my apartment?”
A pause.
“Thank you for making the welfare check weird.”
He starts telling me what happened after I left the party.
Something about Philip. Something about Genevieve. Todd comes up at least once.
I keep scrolling.
“Right,” I say.
“You’re not listening.”
I look at Martin’s name in the search field.
“What are you doing?” he asks.
There is no useful reason to lie. “Looking up Martin Hale.”
“At two in the morning?”
“I started at the party.”
“I noticed.”
“Celeste wants him as a client,” I say.
Owen gives a short laugh. “Celeste wants his money. She wants you to keep whatever else you’re considering out of the transaction.”
“I’m not considering anything. I’m investigating him.”
“Those are frequently the same thing with you.”
“I don’t know anything about Martin Hale.”
