Calloway has not come out.

Then another message appears.

Do I notify the others?

I read it once.

I type back.

Not yet.

The three people who called me would object.

Fortunately, I have not asked them.

EMMA

Iclose the paperback.

“That isn’t your handwriting.”

Reid glances at the book in my hand. “Then this should be easy.”

“What should?”

“You leaving.”

I set the book on the desk. “You knew I’d follow you into that bar.”

“You followed me to Portugal. I was working with the available information.”

I keep one hand on the paperback.

He looks entirely too pleased with himself for a man who has spent the last ten years dead.

“You’re enjoying this.”

“I’m trying to understand what you want.”

“The truth.”

“I gave you the truth.”

“No. You gave me a performance.”

He slides the paperback out from under my hand.

“If you need me to be him,” he says, “I can be him.”

For a second, I think I’ve misunderstood.

Then I don’t.

“You want to impersonate my dead husband?”
