“What do you want me to do?”
“Nothing.”
She cocks her head. “You called me here to tell me to do nothing.”
“I called you here because you have developed a habit of doing things without telling me.”
Celeste looks at me for a long moment, then gives a small nod.
“Stay away from Emma. Stay away from Reid. Let the house manage tomorrow without your help.”
“And after tomorrow?”
“We’ll discuss it.”
Celeste collects her bag and leaves without arguing further.
That has also contributed to her longevity.
The door closes behind her.
I wait a moment before thinking about Genevieve again.
The cars were Celeste.
The champagne was not.
I know Genevieve well enough to understand what she disliked about that room.
I know her well enough to understand why she would never admit it.
Unfortunately for both of us, I was there.
CHAPTER 57
EMMA
By eight the next morning, Reid’s booking photo is on every local news site.
Orange is not his color.
I should probably feel worse about this.
Sad. Guilty. Something appropriately complicated for a woman whose husband returned from the dead and went to jail six days later.
Mostly, I feel nothing.
Reid is alive. He is exactly where he said he would be. For once, neither of those things requires anything from me.
At eight seventeen, the auction house calls.
Yesterday, they fired me.
Today, they would like me to come in.
Reid and I are having very different mornings.
My badge works when I get there.
