I wait.

“There was a boy in the house that night.”

“A boy?”

“Yeah. About sixteen.”

That gets my attention.

Reid turns enough to see my reaction. For the first time since he arrived, he seems almost pleased.

“You never mentioned him.”

“No.”

Ten years.

“You’ve always had such a handle on things.”

I pick up my phone and reply to the writer’s latest email.

Reid Calloway is turning himself in tonight. He says there was a boy in Whitaker’s house. About sixteen at the time.

Twenty-six now.

CHAPTER 55

EMMA

Reid is sitting on my front step when I get home. I stay in the car long enough to notice the sedan parked across the street. The man behind the wheel is looking at traffic with the concentration of someone who has recently remembered traffic exists.

I get out. Reid stands. His eyes go to the bandages on my hand, but for once he keeps whatever he is thinking to himself.

I look across the street. “Is he with you?”

Reid follows my gaze. “No. But I wouldn’t worry. Once I’m gone, he will be too.”

“Great.”

I unlock the door. “Why are you here?”

“I’m turning myself in.”

I stop with the key still in the lock. “I assume this has something to do with Charles Whitaker.”

“That sounds like a conversation for an attorney.”

“Speaking of. I spoke with Michael Bennett.”

“How about you use your inside voice?”
