Iget in my car and text Owen.

Me: You home?

His answer comes before I start the engine.

Owen: Working.

I already knew that.

Me: Can I stop by?

Three dots.

Then they disappear.

Twenty minutes later, I pull into his driveway.

Sarah answers the door.

That is unexpected.

“Emma.”

Her smile disappears when she gets a good look at me.

“What happened to you?”

“Long story.”

She looks at my hand.

“Come in.”

I follow her inside.

“Owen’s in his office.”

“Okay.”

“But wait.”

She turns toward me, smiling again.
