I stared at him.

He smiled. “And now there are these decrees.”

“What decrees?” I asked.

His smile widened slightly. “The nonsense concerning your primary wife, for one.”

My dragon stirred.

The Prime Minister continued eating. “His decree about your primary wife, I don't think we need to take it seriously. Wait a few months, then divorce her for not being able to conceive an heir.”

My hand stopped beside my untouched plate.

“I'll supply you with a drug that will make her sterile,” he continued.

A low growl rolled from my chest. Every conversation at the table stopped. The Prime Minister slowly lowered his chopsticks.

Mei Lin touched my arm. “Kai?”

I looked at her father. “You seem very comfortable supplying drugs to women.”

His expression changed. “What is that supposed to mean?”

“I was wondering if you used the same connections when you had drugs supplied to Mei Lin.”

Mei Lin's fingers slipped from my arm.

Her stepmother frowned. “What drugs?”

One of her sisters looked at Mei Lin.

I turned toward her.

She had gone pale. “Kai...”

“You were born a beta,” I told her.

Her sister gasped. Mei Lin stared at me. Her father pushed his chair back slightly.

“Be very careful about what you're accusing my family of,” the Prime Minister snarled.

“I'm not accusing you.” I looked directly at him. “I'm telling you what we found.”

His face hardened.

“In my possession, I have records of the original designation-altering treatments. Payments to doctors. Treatment dates. Maintenance doses. Those all bore your signature.” I looked at Mei Lin. “And later records contained yours.”

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

“Kai, I can explain.”

“Can you explain the communications you gave your father too?” I asked.

She froze. Her father didn't. He looked at me with the expression of a man calculating how much I actually knew. I answered the question for him.

“We have proof of everything. Mei Lin copied our seals, and the Prime Minister used them to smuggle in forbidden goods like Dragonblight. We have delivery and payment records. Along with proof that she even passed Triad intel she overheard to you.”

Mei Lin shook her head. “I didn't...”
