“Correct.”

“It seems you have it all figured out.”

Kaede nodded.

“Even though I don’t like you, I do hate that this is happening to you and Sinclair. No one should have to go through this.”

Kaede didn’t respond. The two men continued walking in silence. Kaede’s hatred for one witch was messing up his relationship with the witch he loved. Hate was like a damn disease. If you didn’t find a way to cure it, a way to let go of it, it could spread and be transferred to other parts of your life.

“Rhen, I have a favor to ask of you,” Kaede said, breaking the silence.

Snow crunched underneath Rhen’s feet as he walked. What the hell was this dragon about to ask for?

“I could’ve been home by now if I’d used vamp speed. You’re slowing me down, dragon.”

“I have a favor to ask,” Kaede repeated, ignoring the vamp speed comment.

“I don’t do favors.”

“Will you watch over her for me when I’m gone? Keep her safe. Don’t let The Deciders take her.”

Rhen stopped. Kaede took another few steps forward, then he too stopped and turned to face Rhen.

“You serious?” Rhen asked.

“I am.”

“You want me, the playboy, to watch over your mate?”

“You’re not a playboy. You never wanted Sin, not in that way. You only flirted with her because you knew she’d never give in. You have someone you love. And men like us, we can only love one woman.”

Rhen sighed. “That’s true. My heart belongs to someone already. But why do you want me to watch over Sin? I’m a vampire. No one trusts vampires.”

“I trust you. I may not like you, but I trust you. And Sin trusts you. That’s what’s most important. When I’m gone, don’t let her be sad. And… encourage her… to…”

“Love again?”

“Fuck!” Kaede let out a roar. Dragon smoke billowed from his nose. “I can’t even say those words.”

“You don’t have to. Don’t worry. I’ll look after her. But don’t give up yet. I know a powerful witch. I’ll go to her later and see if she has any ideas of a way to help you.” He was sure Winter was already looking into it. This would give him an excuse to visit her again.

“Thanks, Rhen.”

“Thank me with a drink. Santiago’s is still open.”

“I need to get home. I’ll drink with you next time.”

“You’re paying.”

“I’ll pay.”

“Alright. Let’s go. We need to get you out of the cold. You’re half-naked and look like you’re about to pass out.”

As they walked, Kaede asked, “How did you know I was out here?”

“Elder Silas contacted me.”

“Silas, the vampire Elder? You know him?”
