“I had more than a bad encounter. That witch ruined my life. And I know she’s not Sinclair. My dragon knows that. But…”

“The curse confuses him.”

“It’s more to it than that, but that’s the easiest way to explain it. The Elders said if I can forgive this witch and let go of this hatred, my beast would stop feeling this way.”

“Fuck that. It’s not easy letting go of hatred.”

“I know. That witch forced me to kill my parents. My parents will never know that it was her behind that. They died thinking I’d turned against them. They died thinking I hated them enough to take their lives.”

“Fuck.”

“I don’t think I can ever forgive her. I don’t know how. I don’t know where to start. And I don’t have time to figure it out. So, I’m going to spend these next few days loving my mate. Then I’m going to do something to drive a wedge between us.”

“So that after you’re gone, she won’t pine after you.”

“Correct.”

“It seems you have it all figured out.”

Kaede nodded.

“Even though I don’t like you, I do hate that this is happening to you and Sinclair.”

“Rhen, will you watch over her for me when I’m gone?”

Rhen stopped. Kaede took another few steps forward then he too stopped and turned to face Rhen.

“You serious?” Rhen asked.

“I am.”

“You want me the playboy to watch over your mate?”

“You’re not a playboy. You never wanted Sin, not that way. You only flirted with her because you knew she’d never give in. You have someone you love. And men like us, we can only love one woman.”

Rhen sighed. “That’s true. My heart belongs to someone already. But why do you want me to watch over Sin? I’m a vampire. No one trusts vampires.”

“I trust you. I may not like you, but I trust you. And Sin trusts you. That’s what’s most important. When I’m gone, don’t let her be sad. And… encourage her… to…”

“Love again?”

“Fuck!” Kaede let out a roar. Dragon smoke billowed from his nose. “I can’t even say those words.”

“You don’t have to. Don’t worry, I’ll look after her. But don’t give up yet. I know a powerful witch. I’ll go to her later today and see if she has any ideas of a way to help you.”

“Thanks, Rhen.”

“Thank me with a drink. Santiago’s is still open.”

“I need to get home. I’ll drink with you next time.”

“You’re paying.”

“I’ll pay.”

“Alright. Let’s go. You’re half naked and look like you’re about to pass out.”

As they walked, Kaede asked, “How did you know I was out here?”
