I took Calista’s security pass and the PR box, then took the lift to the top floor.
It was a relief that Mr Devlin wouldn’t be there. After my uninspiring day, the last thing I needed was for him to ask me how the project was going. Right now, I’d need a miracle to pull it off.
The lift doors sprang open and I stepped out onto Mr Devlin’s floor.
I hoped Valerie would still be here so I could just hand the box over, but her desk was clear and everything was eerily quiet.
‘Hello?’ I called out as I headed towards Mr Devlin’s office. The lights were off, so I knew he was still out, but I knocked on the door just in case and waited.
No answer.
After pushing the door gently, I poked my head around it.
Yep. The coast was clear.
All I had to do was put the box on his desk and leave.
Simple.
As soon as I stepped in, I was assaulted by his addictive scent.
God, he might be an arsehole, but he smelt so good. It was like a cocktail of something woody and masculine mixed with expensive shower gel.
I padded over to his desk and placed the PR box on an empty space towards the edge.
There. Done.
But just as I was about to leave, I heard the sound of running water.
There must be a leak somewhere.
Calista said that Mr Devlin would be coming into the office tomorrow, but what if he didn’t and the tap leaked down to the floors below?
That could cause a lot of damage.
All I had to do was quickly turn it off. That small action would save the company hundreds, no, probably thousands of pounds worth of damage. And when they discovered that I’d saved the day, Mr Devlin would be so grateful that he’d give me a permanent job.
Yes! Great idea.
I followed the sound of the water and noticed that there was a corridor I hadn’t spotted the last two times I’d been summoned to see him.
Jeez. How big was this office?
I looked to the left and saw a mini kitchen. As you’d expect, it was even fancier than the staff one I’d seen with glossy black cabinet doors.
The sink had gold taps which were firmly closed. No leak there.
As I continued further down the hallway the sound of running water grew stronger.
Aha. It must be in here.
I turned to the right and gasped.
I’d found the running water.
But it wasn’t a leaking tap.
It was a ginormous wall-to-wall glass shower.
