Clearly nothing will happen with the door open and Valerie right outside.
I sat in the chair opposite him and cringed inwardly as I remembered that the last time I was here, I’d embarrassed myself by spreading my legs for him.
‘Good news. You have the green light for the app.’ He looked away from his screen and as our eyes locked, desire pulsed through me.
‘That’s amazing!’ I beamed. ‘Thank you! I can’t wait to get started!’
‘Knock, knock!’ Valerie’s voice sounded from the door.
‘Yes,’ Mr Devlin said.
‘The manuscript still hasn’t arrived and it’s getting late. I can wait if you prefer?’
‘Why can’t she just email it like everyone else does?’ he barked.
‘Apparently the writer is paranoid about sending things online and prefers it to be hand-delivered.’
‘Jesus.’ He rolled his eyes. ‘No. You can go. Just alert reception to expect it and keep it in a safe place until tomorrow morning.’
‘Will do. Goodnight, sir. Night, Eleanor. By the way, you look lovely today. Your curls look beautiful and that’s a very pretty skirt.’
‘Thank you.’ I smiled. I’d forgotten that I was wearing one of the new work outfits Joe had organised and that my curls were down rather than scraped up in a bun.
I wondered if Mr Devlin had noticed.
Valerie closed the door and several seconds later, I heard the chime of the lift.
My eyes locked with Mr Devlin’s again and electricity crackled in the air.
He held my gaze for several beats, then his eyes dropped to his desk.
Mr Devlin wrote something on a Post-it note then handed it to me.
‘This is my brother Heath’s email address. He’ll brief you on the budget and you can report to him. Once everything’s complete, then you can present it to me and the other directors.’
‘What?’ My face crumpled with confusion. ‘But I thought I’d be working directly with you?’
‘That was the original plan, but now…’ He blew out a frustrated breath. ‘I’ve changed my mind.’
‘Why?’
‘You know why.’ His gaze dropped to my boobs, then moved to my legs before slowly returning back to my chest. ‘It’s not a good idea.’
‘I want you,’ I blurted out. I was about to apologise and say I didn’t mean it, but Dana’s words rang in my ears again. ‘I know you’re concerned about how it will affect our working relationship, but I actually think trying to fight this connection will be worse for us than if we just acted on it and got it out of our systems.’
‘That makes no sense.’
‘It makes perfect sense,’ I said. ‘It’s like when you deprive yourself of chocolate. It only makes you want it more. But if you just had a little bite, you wouldn’t binge a whole bar at once.’
‘You can’t compare this situation to chocolate.’ He shook his head.
‘I can’t stop thinking about you!’ I said, desperate to tell him how I felt before I lost my nerve. ‘As soon as I got home after the awards I had to touch myself to finish what you started.’
‘Eleanor—’
‘I spent all weekend thinking about you. About that kiss. About how hard you made me come,’ I continued, ignoring his attempt to stop me. ‘I thought of you this morning when I used the Tempting Tentacle in the shower. And when I got to work this morning, I couldn’t concentrate because all I could think about was how amazing it felt to have your fingers inside me, so I had to go to the toilet and use the Lip-Stick. That’s how badly I want you.’
‘I—’
