“What am I missing?” Kordell asked.
“SBK starved the previous five victims,” Dr. Sharpe said. “Their stomachs were empty.”
Aurora’s chest constricted. “He’s changing his MO.” Or—
Was her team correct, and they were dealing with a copycat?
Chapter Seven
Kordell didn’t miss the fear flickering across Aurora’s face. Why would the killer suddenly change his ways? Kordell was now thankful the CWS squad was coming to the Yukon. “You okay, Rory? I can tell there’s a war going on inside that noggin of yours.”
“A few of my colleagues feel SBK is dead and these kills are from a copycat.” She pinched the bridge of her nose. “He keeps changing his MO, so maybe the others are right and I’m wrong.”
“What’s your gut telling you?”
“That it’s SBK.”
Dr. Sharpe placed his hand on Aurora’s arm. “For the record, I agree with you. This is the work of the Shadow Box Killer. Sure, he’s changing his MO, but there are too many similarities.”
“Exactly. We haven’t disclosed everything about his box signature.” Aurora peered at her watch. “Before we go, Dr. Sharpe, when will you get the tox reports?”
“I’ve put a rush on it, but it could take some time.” He looked at Kordell. “Unless your father can help speed things up, since he seems to have the prime minister on speed dial.”
“I can try.” Kordell motioned toward the door. “We can call him on the way to the park.”
“Good idea. Thanks, Dr. Sharpe. Tell us if you find anything from the hand.”
“Sure thing.”
Fifteen minutes later, Aurora and Kordell arrived at the entrance to Sweetwood Falls National Park. Kordell hit his father’s contact, putting the call on Speaker.
Maxwell Greene answered on the second ring. “Kord, we were just talking about you. Everything okay?”
“Hey, Dad. You’re on Speaker with Aurora. We’ve arrived at the park. The last clue is leading us back here.”
“That’s odd. SBK is all over the place with his game.” Multiple voices sounded in the background.
“Where are you?” Kordell doubted that the jet had made it back to Ontario that quickly.
“The squad is gathering as we want to be ready when the jet arrives.”
“Do you have an ETA?” Kordell noted a group of cross-country skiers getting ready to hit the trails. He didn’t blame them. The fresh-fallen snow would give them a great base.
“We should arrive sometime tonight. I’ll text you the spot I’ve rented for us. Lots of room for both you and Aurora.”
Aurora cut the engine. “Thank you, Mr. Greene. But I’m okay in my condo.”
“Mr. Greene was my father. Please call me Maxwell. The invitation is open. What can I do for you guys?”
“Dad, we’re wondering if you could make some calls and speed up the toxicology results the coroner submitted. We’d appreciate it.”
“What’s the coroner’s name?”
“Dr. Whittaker Sharpe,” Aurora said. “Thank you. We need these to help catch this killer.”
“Understood. I’m on it. Stay safe, you two. See you soon.”
“Thanks, Dad. Love you.”
