“You’re good to go.”

Kordell scooped it up, stuffing it into his waistband. “Aurora, do you have a coat?”

She shook her head.

“I have an emergency survival kit in my vehicle with a flannel shirt and blankets. I’ll get them.”

Aurora smiled. “Always a survivalist.”

Two hours later, after negotiating the slippery roads’ worsened conditions, Kordell and Aurora arrived at the hospital escorted by a constable. It was now late in the afternoon, and the storm had intensified. The team was still conducting its search of the estate.

Kordell scanned the area for suspicious activity, but only paramedics, doctors, and nurses scurried about in the emergency room. Sweetwood Falls General Hospital was tiny but efficient. Kordell turned to the constable. “Monitor the exits. Driscoll may be lurking. He’s good at hiding in the shadows.”

“Copy that, Watcher Greene.” He stood by the entrance and reinforced his sentinel stance, arms crossed, legs shoulder-width apart. Ready to block any suspicious suspects.

After being checked and cleared by the doctor, Aurora went into Ginny’s room followed by Kordell. She wanted to check on her friend and find out exactly what had happened.

Thankfully, Constables Rain and Abrams were both in stable condition. The doctor couldn’t tell them much, only that they were fortunate to have survived the crash. Aurora had reported the information to her leader.

Aurora pulled the chair close to her friend’s bed and took her hand. “Hey, Ginny. I’m here.”

The woman stirred, blinking her eyes open. “Rory . . . you . . . came.” Her words came out gravelly and forced.

“I did, sweet friend. How are you feeling?” Aurora took the cup from the table and tipped the straw in Ginny’s direction.

Kordell positioned himself by the door and leaned against the wall, near enough for protection but distanced to give the two women a little privacy.

Ginny sipped. “Thanks. Throat parched.” She took another drink. “Better. Doc said the drugs are mostly gone from my system. Said I was fortunate to have survived.”

Aurora set the cup back on the table and sat on the bed, hugging Ginny. “God saved you.”

“He did, and so did you guys.” She waved to Kordell. “Hey, glad you had my back, watcher.”

“No prob. You’re looking much better. Perhaps we can do that interview soon.”

“Sounds good.” She smiled, then her gaze shifted to Aurora. “Rory, did you catch him?”

Was she referring to Sebastian or SBK?

Aurora patted her hand. “Don’t you worry about that. Can you tell me what happened? Did you see your abductor?”

“Not at first. I was heading out of my office after work and felt a pinprick. Then I blacked out and woke up in that terrible place.”

“So you didn’t see the person’s face?”

Her lip quivered. “I did. He came into the room and started beating me. Said it was all because of you.”

“What did he look like?”

“Tall, gangly. Curly red hair. Ugly as sin.” A tear trickled down her face.

Aurora’s gaze snapped to Kordell’s.

Sebastian Roche.

Aurora turned back to Ginny and wiped away her tear. “You’re safe, Ginny. That man was someone from our past.”

“Was?”
