“Got here two days ago. Staying at the dive hotel on the edge of town.”

“So you never met the person who paid for your way here?” Aurora wrote two days, hotel, and edge of town in her notes.

“Nope. Only via video on my laptop.”

“Which is where?” Hope surged through Aurora. Perhaps they could get information off the drive.

“My hotel room.”

“You only kidnapped Ginny to get back at Rory and me?” Kordell’s question croaked out, his voice gravelly.

Sebastian wiggled the cuffs chained to the bar. “You both deserved it for all the heartache you caused our family.”

“Did I really almost kill you?” Kordell’s question came out soft, reserved. Unsure.

Sebastian cocked his head, eyebrow raised. “You having a hard time accepting that your Goody-Two-Shoes teenage self would do such a thing?”

Dirk, Nadine, and other members of the forensics team plus their civilian employees bounded around the corner.

“Is there a fire?” Dirk asked. “I don’t smell smoke.”

“Clear all rooms and get everyone out,” Hill said. “Look for evidence of a fire. The alarm went off, so firefighters will be here soon.” He turned to Aurora. “Get our prisoner out.”

Aurora and Kordell rushed back into the interrogation room and halted in their tracks.

Sebastian Roche lay slumped over the table, his face turned toward them—his lifeless eyes staring in their direction.

The alarm was a diversion for SBK to snuff out a loose end.

But how had the killer got into the station undetected?

That was too easy. The look on Aurora’s face when she came out of the interrogation room was priceless. Stern, determined, and—
