Sebastian.

The greedy mongrel answered within minutes of my plea for help in making Rory and Kord pay. All I had to do was dangle the money carrot, and he took the bait. Discovering Kordell’s secret was worth the price I paid.

But now Sebastian will pay for his greediness.

Two things I hate.

Those who manipulate.

And the greedy.

Both of which Sebastian is guilty. Sure, he told me all about Kordell’s supposed part in his father’s trafficking plan, but I didn’t believe a word of it. Not that I know Kordell Greene well, but I can detect a liar a mile away.

I clicked on the camera screens to check on Ginny. She turned her head, eyes barely open, gazing in the camera’s direction as if she knew I was watching. She was coming around but still incoherent. Good. It was only a matter of time before the drug poisoned her system and her organs shut down.

Sebastian’s figure appeared on my other screen. He was luring Kordell and Aurora to the upper level like I asked.

They’ll find Ginny, eventually. Time for the second part of today’s plan. If only they knew how close I was to them. Close enough to reach out and smell Aurora’s beautiful hair.

Caress her pretty face.

Sebastian stopped and banged against the basement floor before running up the stairs.

Leading the duo into another trap.

Good boy.

Little did he know he would fall prey too.

I wrung my chilled hands together, my heart skipping a beat.

I love my job.

Well, job wasn’t quite the right word.

More like . . . hobby.

Chapter Twenty

“Did you hear that?” Aurora stilled but kept her focus ahead of her. She couldn’t look at Kordell after his confession. His betrayal was too fresh. Remaining silent constituted a betrayal in her mind. Yes, she understood why he hadn’t spoken up all those years ago. She wouldn’t have put it past Cain to follow through on his threat to kill her. The man was pure evil. When she had heard of his brutal murder in prison, she almost jumped for joy. But she didn’t. No one deserved that type of death. Not even Cain Roche.

“It sounded like it came from upstairs.” Kordell’s softened voice thrust Aurora back into the present.

She brought out her weapon and ran down the hall, her water-logged boots squishing on the cement floor. Aurora took the steps two at a time with just two things on her mind. Find Ginny, and get out of the creepy institution.

And away from Kordell.

She didn’t have time right now to process his confession. Could she forgive him? Her heart said yes, especially after the promise of that kiss, but her head said no. She couldn’t take further heartache.

They reached the main level. Aurora stopped, scanning the area and listening for movement.

Thud!

“That came from the second level,” Kordell said.

Aurora hurried to the stairs.

“Wait, we need to tread carefully.”
