This was messed up.
Kane hit the emergency button in the app, sending alerts to the whole security team. He hoped to hell they weren’t all compromised. But if Noah was, anybody could be.
Talk about a cluster fuck.
Rachelle was sitting up now, watching him. “Is everything okay?”
“No,” he said. “Everything’s going to hell on a bullet train. I have to go.”
He stepped into his jeans and started looking for his shirt.
“Living room,” Rachelle said. Kane headed out there with her following, wrapping her robe around her. “Is it the casino?”
“I can’t talk about it,” he said. He gave her a brief smile. “But I’ll probably be there the rest of the night. Sorry.” He found his shirt on the floor and slid it over his head.
She nodded, a frown creasing her forehead. He walked over and cupped her face in his hand, tilting it up for a kiss. “I’ll call you.”
She nodded, still frowning, and watched him leave.
* * *
As soon as he was out the door, Rachelle dug out her burn phone and called Carmichael. “Something’s going down at the casino.”
“What’s happening?” he asked.
“Don’t know yet,” she said. “I’m not there. It’s my night off.”
“Damn,” he muttered. “Can you get inside anyway?”
“Depends how tight their perimeter is,” she said. And whether or not she could stay out of Kane’s way. “I’ll try.”
“Damn it!” he muttered. “If Selina is making her move, you need to get on her trail before it fades. Do whatever it takes.”
“I’m on my way.”
Rachelle started pulling clean clothes out of her drawers, trying not to look at the discarded clothes on the floor—remnants of her one perfect day with Kane.
She’d hoped to have more time. A chance to explain to him who she worked for and why she was here, in a way that wouldn’t make him hate her. And that wouldn’t expose him to Carmichael and the Council as the accessory in Selina’s past crimes—Subject Alpha.
The one that got away.
Rachelle should have stayed away from him. But just like ten years ago, once she got near him she was helpless. She’d walked away then and she’d never forgiven herself—and she’d never stopped thinking about what might have been.
What had just happened between them felt big—huge. She’d always known he was her first love. Now she was faced with the knowledge that love had never gone away.
He was definitely not the boy who had protected her on the streets. That boy, even though he was a crazy strong fighter and a skilled hunter, had been emotional and vulnerable. Desperate for love. Needing to be needed.
Now he kept his emotions bottled up, holding them with such iron control that she had the feeling no one had seen the real Kane in years. Maybe not since her. He and Wolf had both suffered for it.
That thought sent a pang of sadness through her. She should never have left. She should have stayed and fought for him.
Now the idea of never seeing him again, never touching him, was like tearing her own heart out. Saving him from Selina and the Agency wouldn’t make up for losing him, but it was something to make up for all he’d gone through when she’d left him with Selina.
She dressed quickly. Black, form-fitting shirt and leggings, and a slimmed-down version of an ammo vest that held all of her basic tools. Over that she pulled a hip-length gray tunic jacket that made her look more normal and less like a cat burglar.
She pulled her hair up in a bun and anchored it with two sharpened hair spikes. She slipped her small pistol into the special pocket at her thigh, making sure it was concealed by the jacket. Best to be prepared for anything.
Then she headed out for the casino. With any luck she could manage to get inside as Raven, an innocent casino employee. If not, then she’d have to use her skills and training to slip in amidst the chaos.
