I laugh softly. “Fine.” I reach for him and pull him down into a deep kiss. “I’ll rest.”

He kisses my forehead before straightening. “Good. Call me if you need anything.”

He leaves, and the moment the door closes behind him, my hand returns to my stomach. I look down at it, my heart bursting with a happiness I don’t know how to contain.

After Roman leaves for work, I decide I can’t spend the entire day trapped in our bedroom. The doctor told me to rest, not to imprison myself, so I slip downstairs and take a slow walk around the estate, enjoying the fresh air and the quiet.

I don’t get very far before I notice something different. There are guards everywhere. Men I haven’t seen before are stationed around the property, all armed and alert.

Some patrol the grounds while others stand near the entrances, watching everything beyond the gates. There seem to be twice as many security personnel as there were before, and every single one of them looks ready for a fight.

The sight sends an uneasy shiver through me. I turn around and head back inside. I find Sofía near the kitchen.

“There you are,” she says, looking me over. “Aren’t you supposed to be back in bed?”

“I was getting tired of being holed up in my bedroom.”

She gives me the familiar look that tells me she’s about to scold me, but I beat her to it. “What happened to the security?”

Her expression softens. “Roman is taking precautions after what happened to you. We were all frightened, Aurora. He doesn’t want to take any chances.”

I glance toward the windows. “It looks like we’re under siege.”

“It’s certainly more security than we’re used to seeing, but hopefully they find whoever is responsible soon. Once they do, things can return to normal.”

“But for how long?” I ask. “What if they don’t find whoever did this for weeks? Or months? Am I supposed to stay locked inside the entire time?”

Sofía shakes her head. “I'm afraid this is how it has to be until the danger has passed.”

I sigh.

Sofía studies me for a moment before smiling. “How about I make you something? A cup of coffee, perhaps?”

“A coffee sounds perfect.”

She gives my hand a reassuring pat, then walks over to the coffee machine.

“Decaf, please.”

She stops and looks over her shoulder. “Decaf? Since when do you drink decaf?”

I can’t stop the smile that spreads across my face as I place a hand over my stomach. “Since I found out we’re having a baby.”

Sofía’s eyes widen. For half a second, she simply stares at me. Then she squeals. “Oh, my goodness!”

She rushes toward me and wraps her arms around me before I can prepare for it. “Congratulations!”

I laugh, hugging her back. “Thank you.”

“This is wonderful news. A baby!” She pulls away, her eyes glistening. “What did Roman say?”

“He doesn’t know yet. I haven’t told him yet. Please, Sofía, don’t tell him.”

Her smile falters. “But why?”

“His birthday is in a few weeks. I want to surprise him. And with everything that’s happening right now, I don’t want to give him another reason to worry. Look at what he’s already done with the security around here. Imagine how he’ll react when he finds out I’m pregnant.”

She laughs softly. “He’ll probably put armed guards outside your bedroom.”
