As did Lucia.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Niccolo asked her.
“With you.”
“I can see that. Why?”
“Whatever the fuck you’re planning, I want in.”
“No. Absolutely not.”
“Fuck you – yes.”
Niccolo looked at Massimo. “Will you please tell your wife to go back in with the other women?”
Massimo chuckled. “You think that’s going to do any good?”
Lucia smiled at her husband, then turned her attention back to Niccolo. “Sofia and Rachel are coming with you.”
“Yes, because Rachel’s a highly trained operative, and Sofia’s a brilliant tactician.”
“And I’m the granddaughter of the Widow of Venice,” Lucia said coldly. “If you want Nonna’s support, then I’m coming with you.”
“No!”
“Yes.”
“Dario!” Niccolo yelled.
“That’s right, go crying to Daddy,” Lucia taunted.
Dario turned around, obviously irritated. “Not out here.”
“Fine,” Niccolo snapped.
We all went into an empty room. The hospital had already cleared out everyone on the floor except for Alessandra –
Including the corpses, which were down in the morgue.
The cops weren’t even on the scene yet. Roberto had bribed them to wait until morning.
The police already had enough problems with the shootout at the Piazza della Repubblica and the Ponte Vecchio, so they’d gone along with it – for a few million euros.
The hospital knew the score, and had also been paid handsomely to cooperate.
But we all knew it wouldn’t last long. Money had bought the Rosolinis a few hours, but then everything would come tumbling down on top of them – and me.
I thought of Emilia.
I would’ve given anything to be with her right now…
But I’d made my bed. Now I had to lie in it.
Even if it was a fucking nightmare.
As soon as we were all in the room, Dario turned to Lucia. “Now is not the time.”
Although Lucia had acted bratty towards Niccolo, she immediately became deferential with Dario. “Don Rosolini, I contacted my grandmother hours ago. Twenty of her best men are on their way to Florence right now.”
