Taking their place in line, Beth said, “Believe me, the wait will be worth it.”

“I have to agree,” said a deep voice from behind them.

Becca’s head swiveled around so fast it was comical, and Beth turned to see Simon Calloway standing there with a big grin on his handsome face.

Today, he was dressed head to toe in running gear. The only sign that he’d broken a sweat was a slight sheen on his forehead; otherwise, he looked cool as a cucumber.

“I don’t think I properly introduced myself the other day. Simon Calloway,” he said, extending his hand.

Since Beth was standing nearest him, she shook his hand first and said, “Beth Summers.”

“Becca Summers,” her sister said next, shaking his hand a bit longer than was necessary.

“Sisters?”

“How’d you guess?” Becca said.

If he sensed her sarcasm, he ignored it. “Are you new in town?”

“We don’t live here,” Beth replied.

“Not yet, anyway,” Becca said.

“Hmm. Well, if you’re considering moving here, give me a call. I’d be happy to help.”

Just then, Simon’s phone rang, and he quickly fished it out of his pocket and looked down at the screen. “Duty calls,” he said and swiftly walked away.

“What an ass,” Becca said as she watched him leave.

“Bec!” Beth scolded, glancing around feverishly to see if anyone had overheard.

Lowering her voice, Becca said, “I wasn’t talking about his ass, although it was rather fine. I was referring to him being an ass. He was trying to sell us real estate while we were standing in line!”

Beth rolled her eyes. “And that’s something you would never do, right?”

“No! Especially not on a Sunday morning.”

Beth laughed. “A little while ago, you were admiring his listing on Bay Street, remember?”

“Yes, but that was when I thought he was hot. Now that I know what he’s really like, forget it!”

“Next,” said the woman at the pastry counter.

“Let’s just forget about him and eat,” Beth suggested, stepping up to the counter.

They ordered donuts and coffee and took their goodies outside to one of the tables set up on the covered patio. Beth noticed Becca scanning the area, but Simon was nowhere to be seen.

“You’re right. These are delicious!” Becca said around a mouthful of cinnamon roll.

On their walk home, Beth spotted Colton sitting on his front porch, reading a newspaper.

Becca, ever vigilant, must have seen him too, and she gave Beth a nudge. “Go talk to him.”

“What? Not now. I’m all sweaty.”

“Who cares? Go talk to him while I pack up.”

Once they reached the walkway leading up to his front porch, Becca practically pushed Beth in that direction. Luckily, Colton had his head buried in the newspaper and hadn’t seen them yet.
