“Be right back,” he said and started to walk away.

“You’re still naked!”

“I’m just going to look out the window and see who it is.”

“Oh.”

He padded across the hall into the home office and glanced out the window. He couldn’t see the visitor, but he recognized the truck that was parked behind his. Sighing, he walked back into his bedroom, picked up his clothes off the floor, and started putting them on.

“Who is it?” she asked, sounding alarmed.

“It’s Wyatt.”

“What? Now?”

The doorbell rang again.

“Maybe we should just ignore it,” she suggested.

He shook his head. “Our cars are in the driveway and there’s a light on downstairs. He knows we’re home.”

She threw back the blanket and started to get out of bed.

“What are you doing?” he growled.

“Getting dressed.”

“No. Stay here, and I’ll answer the door.”

“But—”

“Let me handle this, Maddie. Please.”

“The last time you handled it, there was blood.”

“That won’t happen this time.”

She stared at him with a mix of concern and doubt.

“Just stay put. I won’t be long.” He turned and walked out before she could argue any further, closing the door firmly behind him.

He entered the living room just as Wyatt rang the doorbell for the third time. “Coming,” he shouted, not bothering to hide his frustration.

He whipped the door open and faced his former friend turned adversary. This time, though, Wyatt wore an apologetic expression instead of an angry one, which caught Cody off guard.

“It’s kind of late for a social visit.”

“I won’t stay long.”

“Make it quick,” Cody huffed as he held the door open and motioned Wyatt inside.

Wyatt glanced around as if he were looking for someone else, and they both knew who that someone was. Cody hoped she’d stay out of it this time.

“What do you want?” he grumbled.

Wyatt shoved his hands in his jeans’ pockets. “I came over to apologize.”

Cody raised his brows but didn’t speak.
