“Fran’s a lot different once you get to know her.”
“Just think. If you two get married, your boss will also be your aunt-in-law. Is that what you’d call her?”
Stacy laughed. “I don’t know, but why do you keep assuming that we’re getting married?”
“Why else would he take you to meet his parents? He was testing the water to make sure everyone got along.”
“Well, whatever the reason, we had a great time. He showed me around, and we walked on the beach, swam in the pool, and—”
“Had a lot of great sex, I bet.”
Stacy grinned. “It was a little challenging with his parents in the next room, but we managed.”
“I’m sure you did.” Kelsey hadn’t meant to sound envious, but it was difficult since her weekend with Hudson had ended so abruptly.
“Speaking of sex, how was your weekend?” Stacy teased.
Kelsey’s expression must have given her away.
“Oh no. What happened?”
A waiter approached their table and said, “More water?”
“Yes, please,” Kelsey replied, knowing she was going to need it. She didn’t order her Thai spicy, but she anticipated doing a lot of talking.
After he refilled their glasses and walked away, Stacy said, “Now, tell me everything.”
Kelsey didn’t need the invitation, but she appreciated it just the same. “Everything started out great. We talked a lot, and well…you know…”
“I do know. How was it?”
“Wonderful. Better than with anyone else.”
“That’s how I felt with Nick.”
Kelsey nodded and then took a long drink of water. “On Saturday, we went to the pool. We basically had it to ourselves, and it was perfect.”
“Then what?” Stacy asked.
Kelsey set down her fork since she’d suddenly lost her appetite. “And then I met Annie’s mom.”
“Emily?”
She slowly shook her head, tears springing to her eyes as they’d been doing since she’d learned the truth.
“Oh, sweetie. No.”
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
“Her name is Sonia, and get this, she’s one of Jenna’s clients.”
Stacy’s eyes went wide as Kelsey filled in the rest of the details. “I overheard her talking to Jenna about him, but I didn’t know who she was at the time. She was complaining about co-parenting and how she didn’t completely trust her baby’s daddy…”
Kelsey’s tears fell rapidly, and she stabbed at them with her napkin.
Stacy reached across the table and squeezed her hand. “I’m so sorry, Kels. I wish I’d been wrong about this.”
