“That’s right. Today’s the first day of spring.”
“I bet you didn’t notice the change of seasons in Florida as much.”
“They’re not as drastic as they are here.”
Was that another reason he didn’t want to stay? Personally, she enjoyed the change of seasons since each had something different to offer.
Then the woman she’d spoken to in the other aisle came around the corner with her cart.
“Oh. I’ll just go the other way,” she said. She was probably in her fifties, but she gave Nick an approving once-over before backing up.
“We should probably move,” Stacy said after the woman turned the corner.
“Yeah. I’m done shopping anyway.”
Neither of them seemed in a hurry to go, yet they couldn’t keep standing there.
“Do you have more shopping to do?” he asked.
“As soon as I find the bedding I want, I’ll be done.”
He glanced at her thermos. “I saw a Tim Horton’s just up the road. Maybe we could go there and have coffee and donuts.”
“But you don’t drink coffee.”
He laughed. “I can get something else, but if you’d rather not…”
“I’m not one to turn down a donut.”
“Great. I’ll wait for you in the main aisle, and then we can check out together.”
“Okay.”
After he moved away, she resumed her search for the lavender bedding set. When she found it, she saw the king-sized set was on a high shelf beyond her reach. At her last physical, she’d measured in at five feet four inches, but she felt shorter than that, especially around Nick. They say you shrink with age, so maybe it was already happening.
She turned to see him watching her from the main aisleway. “Did you find it?”
“Yes, but I can’t reach it.”
He pulled his cart off to the side and strolled toward her. Today he was dressed even more casually, in faded jeans, a plain black T-shirt, and running shoes. He also smelled different. Did he wear a different cologne on the weekend, or was this just his natural scent?
“Which one do you want?”
She pointed at the king-sized set, and he easily took it down and set it in her cart. “King-sized, huh?”
She and Cole had bought a king-sized bed after they’d gotten married. After the divorce, she’d considered selling it and downsizing to a smaller bed, but she hadn’t done it yet. Instead, she’d gotten into the habit of buying new bedding every so often to make it her own. She wasn’t about to explain all that to Nick, though.
“You’re probably thinking someone my size doesn’t need all that space,” she said.
He chuckled. “I wasn’t thinking that at all.” His eyes twinkled, and she felt that warm, fuzzy feeling she often got around him.
Averting her eyes to the accessories that coordinated with the bedding, she pulled two throw pillows off the shelf and added them to her cart.
“I don’t understand that,” he mused.
“What?”
“Why are throw pillows necessary when they just get tossed off the bed anyway? Maybe that’s why they call them throw pillows.”
