“I think so.”
Her ear was smashed against his chest, and she let the strong, steady beat of his heart comfort her. He smoothed his hands up and down her bare back until she felt relaxed again, and then he kissed the top of her head and loosened his grip.
She tipped her head up and gave him a tentative smile, knowing it didn’t quite reach her eyes. But she didn’t have to pretend with him, and she was grateful for that. He seemed to sense exactly what she’d needed and was content to stay quiet and hold her.
“It might take me a while to get used to this.”
“I understand.” He caressed her cheek with the back of his hand and smiled softly.
“I had a great time tonight.”
“So did I.”
“I’d like to do it again.”
“I was hoping you’d say that.”
She smiled wider that time. “But not tonight. I need some time to—”
“Say no more. I’ll get out of your hair.” He reached over and started gathering his clothes. But before he could put them on, she placed her hand on his arm to stop him.
“Can I say thank you? I mean, does that sound strange to say?”
He chuckled. “I’ve never been thanked before, but I’ll take it.”
“It’s not just about the sex, although it was wonderful. It’s that…you’ve been so patient with me…more than I deserve…and I…”
He wrapped his arms around her again with his clothes smashed between them this time. “I’m just glad that you trusted me tonight. I’m glad that I’m the first one you decided to be with after—”
She put a finger over his lips, not wanting to hear Owen’s name right now. “I have a favor to ask.”
“Anything.”
“Come prepared next time.”
He chuckled and gave her another squeeze. “I promise.”
While he re-dressed, she went into her bedroom, donned a robe, and then came back out to say goodbye. Sam stood by the door, petting Cocoa and looking just as handsome dressed as he had naked.
For a moment, she considered asking him to stay. Then, thinking it might be too much too soon, she stepped into his waiting arms and settled for a long kiss goodbye.
“Can I call you tomorrow?” he asked after they’d broken apart.
“Sure.”
“Good.”
“Sleep well, Sam.”
“You too.”
He gave her a brief kiss and then stepped outside. She watched him walk out to his truck, and just before he got in, he raised his hand and waved. She waved back and continued to watch until he’d gone down the driveway and driven out of sight.
Afterward, as she went through the house, shutting off lights and checking the doors and windows, she realized she was smiling. It was the first night in a very long time when she didn’t think she’d have any trouble sleeping.
And she was right.
