Her lips were soft and lush, and she tasted like sleep and cinnamon. She moaned, and he slipped his tongue inside her mouth, exploring the sweetness therein. Her body molded to his, and his erection strained against his jeans.

They kissed like they’d been starved for it, and for him, that was true. It had been a long time since he’d held a woman, kissed her, made love to her. Tonight he’d settle for the kisses though even though his manhood was begging for more.

When she suddenly broke the kiss, he figured that was the end of it. They were both breathing hard, and she gazed up at him with an unreadable expression. “Can we…lay down?”

He failed to hide his surprise. “Lay down? Where?”

She pointed at the couch. “I’m feeling a little…dizzy.”

“Oh. Of course.” He took her hand and backed them up to the couch. She motioned for him to lie down first, and he scooted back as far as he could to give her some room.

The furniture here was smaller than his, and she didn’t have much space, but she didn’t seem to mind. She lay on her side, facing him, and placed her hands on his chest.

“Better?” he asked, concern overriding his arousal.

She smiled. “Yeah. I just got a little lightheaded.”

He traced her lips with his index finger. “You probably need some more sleep. Maybe I should put you to bed and leave.”

She wriggled closer, her pelvis brushing against his erection in the process. There was no doubt that she’d felt it.

“You’re just being nice.”

He skimmed his hand down her side and rested it on her hip. “Believe me, nice isn’t the word I’d use to describe myself right now.”

She laughed softly and then tipped her head up and gave him a brief kiss. “Could we…could you…?”

“Whatever you want. Just tell me.”

“Could you just hold me for a while?”

“Of course.”

She nestled her head between his neck and shoulder, and he wrapped his arms around her to hold her in place.

She sighed, and her breath tickled his heated skin. He’d stay with her like that all night if she asked him to. He didn’t expect things to go any further; however, if she wanted more, he wouldn’t turn her down. His body thrummed with desire, but he wouldn’t let that override his brain. If she needed to be held and comforted, then that was exactly what he’d do. His own needs could wait.

While he’d been lying there, thinking and caressing her back, her breathing had slowed, and she’d gone limp in his arms. Was she sleeping?

He didn’t want to move in case she was, but then she spoke.

“Sam?”

“Yeah?”

“Thank you.”

He kissed the top of her head. “Go to sleep, Gillian.”

And she did.

Chapter 15

The following morning, Gillian woke up in her bed alone. It took her a few minutes to become fully awake, and then it all came back to her—the nightmare, calling Sam, kissing Sam, lying in his arms. She sniffed the air. Is that coffee I smell? Is Sam still here? Did he stay over?

She looked around for her robe and saw it folded neatly at the end of her bed. The last thing she remembered was them lying on the couch and him telling her to go to sleep. He must have carried her to bed and tucked her in, but she couldn’t remember it.

She threw back the covers and glanced down at her T-shirt, remembering when she’d revealed it to him. Then it struck her again. I kissed Sam. She couldn’t quite wrap her head around it. She got out of bed and padded into the bathroom, and when she looked in the mirror, she was smiling.
