“I know that.” In fact, he’d been stewing over it a lot lately. After lecturing himself and Morgan about not getting too involved, he’d gone and done it anyway.
“Will you please kiss and make up?”
“Maria!”
“Geez! It was just a figure of speech. Like it would be so horrible to kiss her.”
It was the opposite of horrible, which was part of the problem.
“Maybe that’s your problem.”
“What is?”
“You haven’t had sex in so long that you’re taking your frustration out on Morgan.”
If she only knew… “Okay, that’s it. As much as I’m enjoying this interrogation, I have to get back to work.”
“You never answered the question.”
“Which one? There were quite a few.”
“Will you come out with us tomorrow night?”
“Will that get you off my back?”
“For now.”
“Okay, then.”
“Yay! I’ll text you the details after I talk to Matt.”
After they hung up, he finished his sandwich and went back to reviewing his monthly sales report. He couldn’t stop thinking about what Maria had said, though, about Morgan leaving and how she wanted them to get along. Why did he get the feeling that she was subtly trying to push them together?
No. It can’t be that. Maria had always hated the idea of him dating her friends. Whenever she’d tried to set him up, it had been with an acquaintance, never a close friend. Then there was her comment about him and Morgan kissing and making up. Little did she know that he’d been thinking the same thing.
He and Morgan had been stiff and awkward with each other the past couple of days, and he hated it, yet he wasn’t sure how to fix it. Now Maria had inadvertently given him a way to make it up to Morgan.
On the way home from work that evening, Morgan was staring out the car window, studiously ignoring him. He cleared his throat loudly to get her attention.
“Morgan?”
“Hmm?”
“I’m sorry for blowing up at you.”
She twisted her head around and eyed him suspiciously.
“I haven’t handled the Bryan situation very well, and I’d like to make it up to you.”
“How?”
He should have known she wouldn’t make this easy for him. “I’d like to go out with you tomorrow night…to meet Maria and Matt for dinner,” he added in case there was any confusion.
“Did Maria put you up to this?”
“She called earlier today, but I’d already thought about asking you.”
“Aren’t you worried this will look like a date?”
