“Absolutely not.”
“Christian?”
“He has a boyfriend.”
“Really?”
“Goodbye, Maria.”
“Wait. I was thinking we should take Morgan out to dinner tonight to celebrate her first day on the job.”
“We?”
“You need to eat too.”
“Yes, Mom.”
“Come out with us. It’ll be fun.”
“If by fun you mean sitting and listening to you two giggle and talk about men, count me out.”
“We’re not in high school anymore.”
“Oh. So you no longer giggle and drool over guys?”
“Well…”
“That’s what I thought.”
“It would be a nice thing for you to do as her boss and my brother.”
He sighed, not because he thought Maria was wrong, but because he thought it’d be better to stay away. “Okay, fine, but only on one condition.”
“We won’t talk about men, I promise.”
“Good.”
“I’ll pick you two up at five.”
“Wait a minute. Doesn’t Morgan have a car?”
“She’s only here for three months. I thought I’d just drive her to and from work on my way to the office.”
“But you work in the opposite direction.”
“It’s no big deal.”
“That seems silly. I should drive her since I’m coming here anyway.”
“What if she doesn’t want to keep your ungodly hours?”
“We’ll let her be the judge of that. Where do you want to meet for dinner?”
“How about that new Mexican place on Scottsdale Road?”
“Fine. We’ll meet you there at five thirty.”
“Five fifteen.”
