We carried everything inside, and Mama immediately started inspecting bags.
“Greens?”
“That bag.”
“Potatoes?”
“Under the rice.”
“Butter?”
Rome froze.
I smiled.
“Ohhhh, you fucked up.”
“I forgot the butter.”
Mama stared at him. “How the hell you forget my butter?”
“It’s butter, Ma!”
“And it was on my list!”
I leaned against the counter, enjoying every second until Mama looked at me.
“Good. Kai can go get it.”
My smile disappeared.
“What?”
“And get my hair grease.”
Rome damn near choked laughing.
“You know what? Both of y’all can kiss my ass.”
Mama smacked the back of my head.
“Watch your mouth.”
“Damn, Sugga!”
I snatched my keys off the counter while Rome kept laughing.
“Don’t you got somewhere to be at nine?” I shot back.
His smile disappeared.
Oh.
I stopped walking.
Mama stopped unpacking.
Now this was interesting.
