One by one, voices answered from the floor.

“Tonight.”

“Until I ask tomorrow.”

“While the gates stay open.”

Nobody swore an oath. Nobody offered blood. The words held because each person could take them back.

The floor stayed bare. Spectral chains didn’t reach from the dais. The wards didn’t tighten, and Harrowmere didn’t seal a single door.

Freely accepted leadership didn’t carry the old magic.

It still changed the room.

People stood straighter. Questions replaced wary silence. A bottle passed from one hand to another because both people wanted it to move.

The court existed without surrendering itself.

The Crown reached for the moment and found attention without obedience.

Its light faltered.

Bryony’s shoulders dropped as the pressure eased. The Crown went black against her hair.

Conversation started near the fire. Someone righted the cracked table. The young vampire collected another bucket of sand without being asked. The man in brown tried on the borrowed coat and complained about the sleeves.

The court had a king for the evening.

They remained on their feet.

For the first time, the Crown retreated from a full room that refused to kneel.

BRYONY

The Crown waited until the King’s rooms closed around us before going completely silent.

I stood inside the bedroom door and listened to nothing. No pressure behind my eyes. No cold voice pushing at the back of my teeth. The black points stayed buried in my hair, heavy and still.

Stellan removed the wrapped dagger from inside his coat and put it on the mantel. He kept it within reach.

“It’s saving itself,” I said.

“Yes.”

“For the Night Hall.”

“Most likely.” His split lip had started bleeding again. “It spent too much strength trying to turn hunger into obedience.”

“And failed.”

“It learned.”

“So did we.”

Stellan looked at the dagger, then at the closed doors. His shoulders stayed set as if the next command might strike before either of us crossed the room.
