"You're staring at me," I said, my gaze on a weird tree I'd never really noticed. It was directly in front of my apartment building. How hadn't I noticed it before?

"You're nice to stare at."

I should've scoffed.

My face warmed, instead.

Most of me did.

That was getting really old, but it was probably there to stay.

I had no business being horny for King, but that didn't seem to change the fact that I was.

Finally, I forced myself to look over at him. "What are we doing tonight?"

"I was about to ask you the same question."

"You're the bossy one here." I gestured between us.

His eyes softened, the way they only did when he was amused. "I thought we cleared up that misunderstanding yesterday."

I made a noise of disagreement.

"Neither of us can be the bossy one. We're a team, now," he stated.

"You and I are terrible at being a team. You screened me for half an hour during that game a few months ago, after someone tackled me.

"I only let two pucks by. It could've been worse."

"It could've been worse isn't usually something a good team says, King."

"Ineffective teams can get better. We'll improve," he said. "The question was what we're doing tonight. What do you want to do?"

I grimaced. "I don't want to tell you first."

He lifted an eyebrow. "You want me to go first?"

"Yes."

"Alright." He turned in his chair, as much as a mountain of a man could turn in the seat of a mid-sized vehicle. His knee bumped the side of my thigh, going straight over two of the four cupholders.

There was an insulated water bottle smashed between us. He grabbed the bottle out of the cupholder, and tossed it into the back seat to give us more space.

"In my mind, ideally, we pack a bag of your stuff and spend the night at my place," he said. "We talk things out. Spend the evening trying to figure out where we stand."

I grimaced.

"I can tell from your face that my idea isn't your favorite."

I dragged a hand through my hair. "Not really."

"Tell me your ideal situation."

"I don't know. Two or three days apart, to figure out what I want?"

He lifted an eyebrow. "Ouch."

I swatted his arm. "Don't. This is overwhelming. You have to feel that too."
