By the slight lift at the corners of her lips, Wren appeared to understand he’d diverted the subject to keep from answering her question. “I would love to.”

Her gaze met his for just a split second, but it was long enough for him to notice the rare color of her eyes. They were a light blue, with specks of a darker blue shade. Combined with her auburn hair and freckled nose, she was a rare treat to the senses.

“Are you married?” Grant wasn’t sure why he’d blurted the question, other than because he did wonder if she was truly as innocent as she seemed.

Immediately she stiffened, her gaze flying to where the carriage awaited. He’d scared her, and Grant wanted to kick himself for it. “Forget the question. It is none of my affair.”

She relaxed visibly. “I will see about choosing a few flowers.”

“Of course.” Grant went to the small garden shed and upon finding shears brought them to Wren. “There you are. I will return shortly with my reply for Lady Roberts.”

Once inside the house, he paced. He didn’t wish to visit Lucinda. It would be the first time visiting since he’d had an incident with Tom Roberts, her son, and he did not look forward to Lucinda’s chastisement. Perhaps he could claim feeling unwell. “No,” he said out loud. “I should visit.”

Grant grunted and stared down at the envelope he’d placed on the table. He picked it up and went to find Wren.

Holding just three flowers, she hurried to him and held them up for inspection. “They are beautiful. Thank you so very much.” At the delight on her face, Grant wanted to gift her the entire garden. Acres and acres of flowers would not be worth her delighted smile.

“Thank you for sharing a meal with me,” he replied, returning her smile.

“It is I who should thank you, sir. I have not had such a wonderful meal in a long time.” Wren plucked the envelope from his fingers and practically danced toward the gate and the carriage waiting beyond.

Moments later, it ambled down the drive and out of sight.
