The lass was quite astute.
“She can be very…” Grant started but wasn’t sure how to finish.
“We are from different social standings. Based on that, it is best not to be seen together,” Wren finished for him with the exact right words.
Grant dismounted, took the basket from her, and placed it on the ground. Then he wrapped his hands around Wren’s small waist and lowered her to stand beside her purchases. Her legs gave a bit and she fell forward onto his chest.
For a moment, it was as if time stood still. Wide eyes and parted lips lifted to his face, and it took all his willpower not to kiss her. Instead, he chuckled and ensured she was steady.
Her cheeks pinkened prettily and she held out her arms. “The sway of the horse must have unsteadied me.”
Lifting the basket, Grant held it out to her. “When do you have a free day?”
“Only Sunday. My aunt and I go to church.” She shrugged. “Thank you.”
“Can I call on you?” It was the stupidest thing he’d ever uttered. Grant wasn’t sure what had come over him.
Wren must have thought the same because a frown marred her face. “What?”
“Perhaps we can go for a ride. Or you can visit me… at my house.”
Her eyes moved from him to the side and then back to him. “What are ye expecting from me?”
“Nothing,” Grant said, holding out both hands. “I enjoy your company, that is all.” He took a breath.
Brushing her windblown hair from her eyes, she studied him for a moment. “I enjoy yours as well, sir, but you must understand that we can never be friends.” After a moment she added, “Thank you so much for the ride. The walk would have been tiring.” With that, she turned and walked away.
Grant remained rooted to the spot, unable to look away from the soft sway of her hips. He had not actually meant to ask to see her again. Had he? It would be utterly ridiculous.
The hangover was what had prompted him to suggest calling on her. She was but a maid, not that he thought it meant she was beneath him. It was just that there was absolutely nothing to be gained from any kind of assignation with Wren. His firm policy was that he only forged relationships with women who could help him financially, and as lovely as she was, Wren had nothing material to give him.
He mounted and continued to follow her progress until she went through the gates. It was only then that a thought occurred. What if she told someone? Rumors would fly between the servants, and no doubt reach Lucinda’s ears quickly.
Turning the horse around, he raced down two streets until turning the corner and arriving back at Lucinda’s townhouse. He went to the front door, and as he hesitated before knocking, the door opened. Lucinda stood in the doorway behind her personal maid. Apparently, she was about to leave.
There was disapproval in her gaze as it traveled over him. “Why are you here? Your appearance is dreadful.” She stepped back from the door and shoved her maid forward. “Put my things in the carriage, I will be there shortly.”
“I returned because I need to speak with you about your offer. To help me with the sponsorship of the ship. Lord Johnstone will inquire—that is the only reason I ask.” Bile rose in his throat, and he struggled to clear it.
“You are to meet his lordship like that?” Lucinda’s eyebrows rose. “Honestly, Grant, what has come over you? You have not been yourself lately.”
“Of course, I am going to bathe and change before meeting him. And I promise you that on Saturday, you will find me without fault.” He gave her what he knew was a devilish smile. “Allow me to see you again tonight.”
Despite her obvious disapproval of his appearance, her lips curved into a smile. “If only. I have a prior engagement. The Astors are entertaining tonight. Unfortunately, my son has insisted on escorting me,” she said, referring to one of the most prominent families in Glasgow.
Of course, her son would insist on going. It would be beneficial for him as the family had three daughters, one of whom was a current debutant and seeking a husband.
“I am disappointed.” Grant met her gaze and pretended to have forgotten about the money. “I will see you soon, then.” He took her hand and kissed it. “Enjoy your day.”
He went to the doorway.
“The money will be in your account today,” Lucinda called after him. “I do not like to see you so distracted. Make sure you are not seen in your current state by someone we know. Perhaps wear a cloak.”
Since his back was to her, she could not see his triumphant expression. Taking the cloak proffered by the ever-proficient butler, he called out, “Thank you, my darling.” When he glanced over his shoulder at Lucinda, he gave her what he knew was a seductive expression. “Enjoy your evening.”
