We all turn at Harper’s voice. Tears are running down her cheeks. Her eyes are wide, and her lips tremble.
“Hey, H.” Kenz wipes the tears from her cheeks and gives Harper a smile.
Harper stands and sits next to Kenz on the chair before wrapping her arms around her best friend. “I’m so sorry.”
Kenz takes a deep breath and exhales. “You didn’t do anything wrong, H.”
“It’s my fault they took you.”
“No.” Kenz pushes Harper away, holding her shoulders and meeting her eyes. “None of this is on you. None of it. Or even you guys.”
She looks around the room, and her steely gaze stops on mine.
“I don’t give a shit what you might have done to get on these guys’ radar, but you absolutely would have never done what they did. None of this guilt lands on any of you. It’s all on them. Zach and Tanner and those fuckers who decided to follow them. Not you. Them.”
Harper smiles through her tears. “I’m still not happy any of this happened to us.”
Kenz chuckles. “But you’re in love. Sometimes we have to take the bad to get to the good. Though I could do without Zach and Tanner and anyone like them.”
She shudders and pulls Harper back into her arms. “I’m just glad you’re safe. That drive to the hospital was the longest of my life.”
“Drive?” Harper pulls away a little.
“Caden brought you to the car fucked up on whatever they injected you with.” Kenz’s fingers ghost over the bruise on Harper’s arm. “I’ve never driven faster in my life to get you to the hospital.”
“Then thank you.”
“No need to thank me, H. You’re my ride or die, and I would do anything for you. Absolutely anything.”
Jack clears his throat. “Because you guys escaped, some of the guys left the room, evening the odds. It also distracted Zach from me and Harper and gave Penny the chance to get the knife.”
“You’re our hero.” Harper’s tears spill down her cheeks again.
“Yeah, well, it was a rough night for everyone.” Kenz shrugs. “Which reminds me.”
She moves away from Harper and reaches into her pocket. She offers a thumb drive to Jack. “I found this yesterday.”
“What is it?” Jack takes it and puts it in his pocket.
“Zach talking to two of his guys about drugs and the hospital.” Kenz smirks and leans back on her hands. “Hopefully with what they found last night. This will be the cherry on top.”
Jack smiles. “Good.”
“Someone took a video of Sidney’s ‘acceptance speech.’” Kenz pulls out her phone and cues up the video before pressing play and handing it to Harper. “The comments are wicked. The queen has fallen.”
I keep my gaze on Harper as she watches the video. I’m curious if it will spark any of her memories. Sidney needed to go down, socially. But I don’t know if she’ll get anything more than a slap on the wrist for her involvement with Zach.
Harper covers her mouth as Sidney goes off. Her eyes lift to mine as the video ends.
“I see myself on stage, but I can’t remember any of that.” Her brow furrows. She turns to Kenz. “Were there any other videos from last night at the Homecoming dance?”
Kenz hesitates and looks around at all of us warily as she takes her phone back. “Yes, but you don’t want to see them, H.” Her gaze settles on Harper. “It looked scary. It’s no wonder you don’t remember. Maybe it’s better if you don’t.”
Maybe it is better if Harper doesn’t remember. The house of horrors she was in and the running barefoot in the forest are one thing, but every student at the dance thought it was happening to us. That a shooting was happening. Thankfully it wasn’t, but the fear will remain.
“Oh, school is closed Monday.” Kenz perks up. “Gym class might be cancelled for a while if we aren’t able to go outside too.”
Harper stands and paces. “Maybe I should watch the footage.” Her gaze goes to Eli. “Maybe it will trigger my memories.”
