“I do. But for some reason, you want me to care that you left your old team behind to join mine. And I do not feel the slightest bit bad about that.”

“I’m leaving my teammates. Switching all my classes. Giving up my incredible roommate, Jenny, who makes the most amazing Rice Krispies treats, which means I won’t get them anymore.”

“Your life is a little more complicated for a chance at the Olympics. I think the trade-off speaks for itself.”

“I guess you're right…”

"Also, I have to put up with your attitude in practice for the next two years. I'd say we're both making sacrifices.” I could practically hear the smirk in his voice, and a disbelieving laugh escaped me.

“I do not have an attitude.”

Looks like he was getting his first taste of Shortcake.

But in my defense, it was a coping mechanism of sorts. The last few weeks had been a whirlwind, and my whole life was being turned upside down.

“Yes, you do. But it’s okay. I told you I could handle you, remember?”

For some reason, his refusal to dwell on the complications of the situation helped me calm down.

I just needed a reminder that this opportunity was worth the risk.

“Right,” I said, clearing my throat. “Well, let me know if you find out anything about housing. And thanks again for checking for me.” I was suddenly eager to end the call, embarrassed by how easily I'd slipped into such a casual conversation with him.

“I’ll text you if I find any leads,” he said.

I hung up, then set my phone back down on the bed, and let out a slow breath.

“It’s going to be fine,” I said aloud to myself.

Or so I hoped.

Later that night, Rove texted me.

ROVE: I found a small studio apartment near the gym.

He dropped a phone number into the chat.

ME: What's this?

ROVE: The landlord's number.

ME: Do you know how much it is?

ROVE: You'll have to call.

A second message appeared.

ROVE: Tell the landlord I sent you.

I debated asking why, but then thought better of it.

ME: Will do.

I stared at the screen for another second.

ME: Thank you.

ROVE: Don't thank me yet.
